Edge Data Transfer (EDT)

The Edge Data Transfer (EDT) module is an import and export utility for The Edge. It supports exporting customer, inventory, and transaction data. Currently, the import capability is limited to customer data only. Future versions will add support for importing inventory and sales data.

The module is designed to allow you to keep data synchronized with an external source (e.g. your website). On initial setup, parameters are specified for what data to include. The first time the module runs all chosen data is exported. On subsequent runs, only new or changed data is included.

Data is imported and exported in JSON file format.

How It Works

EDT runs as a separate application with a corresponding service. The application exports and imports raw data from The Edge and the service then packages this data and sends it to a local folder or FTP site. When the service connects it uploads the exported data into the Inbox folder and then checks the Outbox folder for any data coming back to The Edge to be imported.

The EDT application includes an interface that allows you to choose what data is included in the export. The recommended setup follows these steps:

  1. EDT configured for what to include in export.
  2. EDT manually run to upload all matching data.
  3. Task setup to run EDT automatically on a schedule. Thereafter, each time it runs it only includes data that is new or has changed since last time it was run.

The data files are in JSON format and your images will be in whatever format you save them (i.e. jpg, png, gif). It is up to your developer to retrieve these files and they must be able to work with this format. Any customer data your developer leaves in the Outbox to be imported must exactly match our data format or it will not be imported.
